Gletsjers
Gletsjers leven. Ze groeien en sterven af. Ze bevatten gezamenlijk bijna dertig miljoen kubieke meter ijs, dat is bijna negentig procent van al het zoetwater op onze aarde. Ze bepalen ons klimaat, ons leven.
Erna: ‘Mijn ultieme ervaring was toen ik – 25 jaar oud – in het hooggelegen dorpje Pisang recht tegenover het Annapurna massief in Nepal stond. Het was een kristalheldere nacht. Ik stond op het dak van een huis en keek recht op 5000 meter hoge gletsjers, beschenen door ijzig wit maanlicht. Ik hoorde ze knallen en nadreunen. Onbereikbaar ver en toch dichtbij. Dat bleek de basis van mijn fascinatie.
Toen zag ik ze in volle omvang – maar nu zijn ze niet meer dan de helft van wat ze waren.
Ik had het voorrecht om in de Alpen en in de Himalaya op en tussen deze iconen van de opwarmende planeet te lopen, diep onder de indruk. Nu ben ik gefascineerd en geprikkeld om hun gelaagdheid vast te leggen in verf, want ze trekken zich terug, in rap tempo.’
Erna Anema woont en werkt in Noord-Holland.
Ze volgde haar opleiding aan de Rietveld Academie en daarna aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam en exposeert in binnen- en buitenland. Ook is was zij hoofddocent aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Werk van haar is in bezit van diverse binnen- en buitenlandse musea onder andere het museum Voorlinden in Den Haag.

Erna Anema:
“As an artist, I have always been fascinated by light; the clearances of light can make forms either appear or disappear, as a result of which boundaries in my paintings become both visible and invisible. My interpretation of this phenomenon is depicted in large oil paintings.
In my paintings, I explore boundaries. At the intersection where colors start to contradict, boundaries emerge.
I brush extremely thin and transparent layers of oil paint on vast canvases, using the flow of my breath.
The shapes that arise on the canvas, stem from the physical movement of me and my brush. The images that appear, characterize my fascination for natural patterns – rocks, ice, clouds, the sky and the earth – that years of travelling around the world have given me.
Maybe it’s because of these travels, that I see myself as a painter in the Dutch tradition: Light & Sky
Every brush stroke represents a decision, which I use to make these images visible. These decisions form a big visual part of my work.”
Erna Anema lives and works in North Holland. She finished her education at the Rietveld Academy and then at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and exhibits at home and abroad. She also was a senior lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work is in the possession of various national and international museums, including the Voorlinden museum in The Hague.
